If you’re the type of mom who hates to clean, you’re probably not looking forward to spring cleaning. And I don’t blame you! Cleaning your entire house from top to bottom does seem a little daunting. In this post, I will share some different strategies and spring cleaning tips that will help you get it done faster so that you can get back to your life and enjoy the beautiful spring season!
make a plan
Don’t just decide to tackle your spring cleaning all at once, or you’ll likely end up overwhelmed and exhausted.
When you make a plan, you can choose to spread out your spring cleaning tasks over the course of a few weeks, as opposed to all in one weekend.
So start by thinking of everything you want to clean. And then make a list.
I like to break my list down by room, with the most important room listed at the top.
(And in case you’re wondering, the room with the most importance changes every year. With my kids being home for 10 months out of 2020, I retreated to my bedroom more often than usual. So this year, my bedroom is in dire shape.)
Once you have your list, it’s time to consider your schedule.
When do you, personally, have the most time to focus on spring cleaning?
Are you a morning person or a night owl? What time of the day are you too exhausted to keep your eyes open?
If the mid-afternoon slump hits you every day, you should probably save your spring cleaning for the morning or early evenings.
delegate
There’s no reason why you need to tackle your spring cleaning all by yourself, Momma!
Have everyone in your family help you by delegating specific jobs to specific family members.
It can be helpful to consider everyone’s strengths and weaknesses beforehand.
So for example, if your husband sucks at wiping down the counters, you probably shouldn’t task him with cleaning the flat surfaces.
My husband is obsessed with keeping the carpet clean, so that will definitely be one of his duties this year!
Now, it’s really up to you how as to how many tasks you delegate and how many tasks you reserve for yourself. I know it can seem easier to just end up cleaning everything on your own, especially if you want it done a certain way. But it will make your job a heck of a lot easier if you can have your family help you with your spring cleaning.
So give some age-appropriate tasks to everyone in your family.
Kids love to help, and there’s no reason for you to have to do everything!

make it fun
I don’t know about you, but I’m usually pretty unmotivated to clean… Mostly because I can find 15 other things I’d rather be doing.
But when I make the process fun, I’m much more likely to get started AND keep going!
Here are some ideas to help make cleaning fun:
- Listen to music (and dance while you’re at it!)
- Perform a lengthy beauty treatment, like a hair or face mask
- Watch TV while you clean a certain room
- Listen to an audio book or a podcast
- Talk on the phone with a friend
So the next time you find yourself procrastinating on your spring cleaning, try one of these ideas and you just might be more motivated to get it done!

spring cleaning tips
So how can you make your spring cleaning easier to handle and more efficient? Here are some of my best spring cleaning tips that will help you conquer your home quickly.
start at the top and work your way down
Don’t dust your entire house after you’ve vacuumed and mopped your floors.
Instead, always work your way from the ceiling to the walls, to the surfaces, to the floors.
This is one of the best ways to make your cleaning more efficient. When you’re cleaning and dusting the walls and ceiling, the dust will fall all over your flat surfaces. And then, when you clean your tables and counters, that same dust will fall to the floor, along with any crumbs. If you were to clean your walls last, all the dust and dirt would get spread around your home, and it wouldn’t truly be clean.
Similarly, when you’re following a weekly cleaning routine, you want to dust first and save your floors for last.
determine your personality type
If you are a type-A person, you can tackle your house in one go by taking on two areas at a time. This could look like you washing all the light fixtures in the dishwasher while you dust the ceilings.
Otherwise, if you would prefer to work in smaller sessions, you can work room by room. Completing one task at a time and finishing the room in its entirety before moving on to another area of your home.
do as much or as little as you want
If you aren’t up to taking on your entire house, that’s okay.
But I definitely recommend getting the basic tasks done for each room – dusting, washing walls and windows, cleaning flat surfaces, sanitizing commonly touched surfaces like light switches and doorknobs, cleaning the floors, as well as laundering linens, bedding, curtains, and rugs.
declutter first!
This is the most important tip of all!
It’s easy to become overwhelmed by spring cleaning if your house is cluttered.
The more clutter you have, the harder it will be to clean.
But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible!
If you’re struggling with clutter, look for things you can get rid of for 15 minutes a day, over the course of the next two weeks. And then, start the spring cleaning process.
But in the meantime, grab a trash bag or an empty box and start with a quick sweep of your home – looking for things you can easily let go of. Unused toys, old paperwork, broken chargers, ripped clothing, etc.
This will allow you to easily create space in your home and your spring cleaning efforts will be more successful!
your turn
Spring will be here before you know it. And these spring cleaning tips will help you get your cleaning done so you can get outside and enjoy the warmer weather!
But the first thing you need to do is start decluttering. If you’re ready to start decluttering, but you’re unsure where to start, grab a copy of my free decluttering checklist. 👇
