It’s getting to be that time of year, where the leaves fall from the sky, the air turns crisp, and you want to snuggle up with a fluffy blanket, a good book, and a warm drink. Maybe it’s because I’m super nostalgic, but I just love for my home to be extra cozy for the holidays.

potpourri on the stove
The smell of orange, nutmeg, and cinnamon lingering in the air will definitely make your home feel cozy for Christmas. You can always buy pre-packaged potpourri from Amazon. But your best bet is to go the DIY route. The ingredients will last the whole season (and then some) and you can easily make another batch when the aroma fades.
I like to make a batch and leave it on the stove for a few days, turning the burner on and off randomly throughout the day. After a day or two, I’ll throw it out and then make a new batch a few days later. I gotta say, the smell of Christmas brings a sense of nostalgia you didn’t even know you had.
diy potpourri recipe
- 1/2 cup fresh cranberries
- 1 sliced orange
- 4 cinnamon sticks, halved
- 1 tbsp cloves
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 2 cups water
Add all the ingredients to a small pot and simmer over low heat. Or you can place them in your crockpot and turn to low.
Again, my favorite thing about stovetop potpourri is the fact that I can reuse it multiple times. When it starts to get low, just add more water!
WELCOME mat
One of the quickest ways to make your home cozy for the holidays is to add a welcome mat outside your front door. They are budget-friendly and easy to find, which means you can have a festive and cozy front porch in no time!
You can pick one up here on Kohl’s website. Or you can have a custom welcome mat made through an Etsy seller. Whichever route you choose, you can easily up the coziness factor by adding some holiday accessories to compliment your welcome mat!
throw pillows & blankets
Switching up throw pillows and blankets is my most favorite way to change up my home throughout the seasons. With just a simple blanket and a decorative pillow, you can change the entire vibe of a room. And the fuzzier the blanket, the cozier it becomes!
I got the fall blanket and pillow from Dollar General last year. And the Christmas accessories are from Michael’s. So you don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a cozy home for Christmas!
printed bedding
Another option is to switch up your bedding. You can find some really cute printed sheet sets at Kohl’s. And Wayfair has some cozy quilts and comforters.
Christmastime is magical for kids, so I usually change up my children’s bedding to make their rooms a little bit more cozy for the holidays.
artwork
Another thing that can make a HUGE difference in your home is seasonal artwork. No matter your style, you’re sure to find a festive piece of art that you love.
You can go big with art in every room of your house, make a dramatic statement with a large piece, or minimal with just a few favorite pieces in your family room.
But where can you get those beautiful holiday quote signs?
From Hobby Lobby and Michael’s!
(Pro Tip: both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s have 50% off all Christmas decor from Halloween until Thanksgiving. The piece pictured below only set me back $15 during their sale!)
lighting
Lighting is one of the most versatile tips on this list since you can change the entire vibe of a room with just the lights. From using bulbs that are lower on the Kelvin scale (2700K-3500K), to dimmers and twinkly lights, the possibilities are endless (and cozy!).
faux greenery
I have recently jumped on the faux greenery wagon, and let me tell ya – I’ll never look back! Again, you can find them at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby for a couple of bucks each, which means you can get a whole bunch of festive stems for under $20.
To make my home cozy for the holidays, I like to get the snow-covered faux branches. I usually keep them in a tall vase, but last year, I mixed a few pieces in with my decor.
Extra decorations &/or trees
And finally, if you really want to have that cozy feeling, you can always add extra decorations. But don’t go overboard! Instead, think of subtle touches that you can add to your home, like wreaths on the cabinets or the backs of chairs.
Alternatively, you can add a small, tabletop tree to your child’s dresser or put up some garland around your doorways.
You can also set up a hot chocolate station, a mini bar cart, or both. 😉
